Pet Emergency Kit
March 17, 2026 · For Pet Owners

The Houston area is no stranger to extreme weather. Severe storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes can lead to power outages, flooding, and sudden evacuations or shelter-in-place orders, and access to stores may be limited.
Many people already have emergency plans in place for their homes or families, but pets are not always top of mind when we think about disruptions to daily life. Having necessary pet supplies in a designated location in case of emergencies is an easy way to plan ahead.
What To Pack in Case of an Emergency
In many ways, an emergency packing list is similar to a traveling list – if an evacuation happened, what would you need to transport your pets and take care of them?
While emergency needs vary by species, age, and size, these basics can help pet owners prepare:
A pet carrier or crate
A sturdy leash, harness, and backup collar with ID tag
Medications in a waterproof container
A pet first aid kit
Enough food and drinking water to last through an extended disruption (and a travel bowl for easy serving)
Sanitation needs, including cat litter, trash bags, and cleaning supplies
Printed medical records, including vaccinations, rabies certificates, prescriptions, and microchip information
Current photos of you and your pets in case you are separated, including any distinguishing features
Pet beds, toys, and treats that are familiar to your pet to help them feel comfortable
It helps to check your emergency supplies once a year to make sure they still fit your pet’s needs, especially as they grow. This may include replacing any expired food or medications, updating medical records, and printing new pet photos if their appearance changes.
Planning for every potential outcome is impossible, but setting the most important items aside for easy access can alleviate a lot of stress. Since disaster can strike at any time (including when you are not home), it can be helpful to keep contact info for you, your local veterinarian, and the nearest emergency pet hospital written down and kept with emergency supplies. Emergency Pet Care of Texas is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and ready to help as needed.
