Summer's here, which means it's time to fire up the grill and pack the picnic basket! If your pets are joining in on the festivities and you want to treat them, many of the foods at your gathering are safe for pets and healthy for them.
1. Grilled Chicken Breast: A lean and protein-packed option that's perfect for you and your pup. Just make sure to remove any bones and seasoning before sharing.
2. Fruit: Nothing beats refreshing cool fruit on a hot day. Watermelon and other melons along with blueberries, are pet favorites. Plus, they’re hydrating and packed with vitamins.
3. Veggies: Your dog will love sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots, zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower. Cook them with a hint of olive oil for added flavor or let them enjoy the vegetables raw.
4. Raw Carrot Sticks: Crunchy and low in calories, carrots are a fantastic snack for you and your furry companion. They're also great for your dog's dental health.
A Pupsicle is a great way to treat your dog and cool them down simultaneously.
Peanut Butter Pupsicles
¼ Cup Creamy Peanut Butter*
1 cup Plain Low-Fat Yogurt
1 medium ripe banana
6 dog biscuits (optional)
Mash the banana well in a medium bowl. Combine the peanut butter and yogurt by mixing well by hand or with an electric mixer. Divide the mixture between 6 small paper cups and add a biscuit sticking out of each cup to serve as a handle once frozen. Freeze for a minimum of 3 hours. Once they’re set, cut away the paper cut and serve to your pooch.
*Many peanut butters contain xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. Dog-safe peanut butter shouldn’t contain more than peanuts and salt.
